Cafe Andel in Plzen

Café Anděl

Café Anděl is a bright, modern café next door to the vegetarian restaurant of the same name and under the same management.

Cafe Andel in PlzenThe six or eight tables just inside the large plate glass windows are the café’s smoking area, behind that is the U-shaped bar, and at the rear are the four non-smoking tables. The air at the rear of the café could hardly be called smoke free, as the space above the bar is open to the smoking area at the front, but the ventilation seems to work quite well and non-smokers will be much happier here than in most of Plzeň’s other cafes.

Warm and cosy

Light shades hanging low over the bar and the dark painted ceiling make the open space of Cafe Anděl seem cosier. The seating is all up on raised platforms of exposed wooden floorboards and the dark cherry coloured tables are sturdy and comfortable.

Good coffee

The coffee is good and reasonably priced; espresso with milk and cappuccino are 34Kč and iced coffee with ice cream is 49. The menu promises a selection of cakes but they’re subject to availability and late one Saturday afternoon when I visited, the only choice was honey cake, but that was fine because it was deliciously fresh and came with a drizzle of chocolate topping.

Mixed drinks, breakfast and wi-fi

Toasted sandwiches for breakfast at the angelThere's also an extensive offer of mixed drinks and spirits including imported whiskies, vodkas and tequila and Czech rum, brandies and liqueurs. And if you're out and about too early for stiff drinks, breakfast is served from 7.30 to 10.00 each morning and consists of your choice of hot drink with toasted sandwiches ranging in price from 53-62Kč. They have Wifi internet access available for customers, but it’s not advertised anywhere and you’ll have to ask for the password.

Cool music

The music is too loud to be described as background music but it was fairly well chosen mainstream stuff that seemed to suit the twenty- and thirty-something clientele. Lenny Kravitz, Coldplay, and Madonna all got a spin and there was even an old Creedence number, but maybe they put that on especially for me.

Both times I visited the staff were prompt, attentive and pleasant, and I recommend Cafe Anděl for the service, price, breakfast deals and the best coffee I could find in Plzeň.
